Sinkhole Diagnostic and Repair

Sinkhole excavation of a property with the yard collapsing. Repair of sinkhole & land stabilization.

Sinkhole Restoration & Land Stabilization

Over time, land will shift and areas of lesser compaction will open up and cause sinkholes to form. Usually they are affected by man-made improvements that have failed over the years or a place in which things were buried and forgotten about only to show up later. This unstable ground will cause to soil to give way from the surface and eventually have the potential to do some serious harm. We offer several options to seek out and identify the causes and come up with a place how to solve these hazardous areas from progressing.

No matter the cause, sink holes can provide an awfully broad range of danger.

Warning Signs:

  • Cracks along window corners or masonry that have a gap.
  • Newly discovered cracks in the foundation of houses or buildings.
  • Cracks in interior walls especially along outer corners.
  • Cracks in circular patterns in the ground outside.
  • Depressions in the ground.
  • Trees or fence posts that tilt or fall.
  • Doors or windows become difficult to open or close.
  • Rapid appearance of a hole in the ground.

Common Causes of Sinkholes:

  • Buried stumps or other debris by someone several years earlier are often the cause we see when coming to diagnose a potential sinkhole. These sink holes often offer clues on the surface that we are able to observe and with a little digging, the problem can be short lived. This is fairly common and not that complicated to repair.

  • A collapsed sewer or broken water line is also fairly common and we can provide a sewer camera diagnostic test to determine the definitive cause of your sinkhole quickly. It is very common to have a collapsed or cracked sewer drain line and not even know. While the signs of this kind of sewer line failure are easy to test for, it can be hard to detect if you are not sure what to look for.

  • Septic systems that have outlived their lifespan and are improperly abandoned can create the most dangerous sinkhole for a residential client. We see these in older homes mainly in suburbs and rural settings. While the process of abandonment was safe immediately after a septic system was disconnected and likely connected to sewer, the long term stability is questionable. There is a very high frequency of this type of sinkhole being extremely dangerous. As a small hole opens up, just the curiosity of what lies beneath can be enough to put someone at risk of falling into the bottom.

When it comes to these or any other types of unexplainable holes forming in your yard, be sure to call us to professionally inspect and rid your yard of these dangerous hazards. We can fix, fill, stabilize and repair a sinkhole you find in your yard.

Debbie

Peter with Rock Creek Excavation completed a large excavation / backfill/ old pipe and culvert removal for a job I am working on with DC DOEE.  It was complicated and situations would arise as he excavated to deep depths. He was fantastic. Always there, always offering great solutions to problems, and communicated every step of the way.

I was never worried about the status and completion of  the job.  Couldn't have asked for a better person - better company to handle and complete the project in such a solid way.

High praise and highest recommendation!!
